Tarifa – Town of Windsurfers on the Coast of Light
Tarifa is a Spanish town located on the southernmost Costa de la Luz that translates to the Coast of Light and is the part of Cadiz province in Andalucía region of the country. Being located on the southernmost part of European continent, Tarifa is only 14 km away from the coast of North America and is known as the hub of windsurfers.
History:
The origin of Tarifa dates back to prehistoric towns and there are many evidences to prove this fact. It was during the Middle Ages that the town became important for its perfect location on the Straits of Gibraltar. Muslim dynasties occupied the town in 8th century and ruled here for over five centuries, leaving a great impact of Muslim culture on the town. Tarif Ibn Malluk was the new name given to the town under Muslim rules. It is also believed that the word ‘tariff’ was borrowed from the town, as it was the first port to charge traders for using docks.

The Arabic walls surrounding the town are certainly a significant feature of this place. Apart from that, one can visit the Santa Maria Church that was built on the remains of an ancient mosque.
