City Tashkent – The Architectural Marvel of Uzbekistan

Tashkent, the capital city and the largest city of Uzbekistan as well as Central Asia; is located in the Tashkent Region between the Syrdarya River and western slopes of Tien Shan Mountains. Tashkent is not only an architectural hallmark but also a principal transportation hub and a leading business centre of Uzbekistan. With majority of its population being Uzbeks, the city is a popular tourist destination on account of its Tashkent Metro Subway, the only metro subway in Central Asia.

Tashkent has a wide range of accommodation options. From star hotels (2, 3, 4 and 5 star hotels) to budget hotels and apartment hotels; the city acts as a tourist haven. The charges of hotels depend on the kind of customer services provided by them and the occupancy of rooms (single/double). History
Tashkent known as Shash, Binkent and Chach at various points of time has evolved from a political centre to one of the largest metropolitan cities of Uzbekistan. The origin of city is as old as 2200 years. This ancient city of the Great Silk Route was conquered by Arabs in 751 BC due to its ideal business location. The city got its name ‘Toshkent’ or ‘Tashkent’ (Turkish word meaning ‘The City of Stone’) in 11th century. It was ruled by Jenghiz Khan and Khorezmshahs in 13th century followed by the Mongols and Timurs.

In 16th century, Shaybanids made Tashkent an architectural marvel by constructing landmark monuments. It became the capital of Uzbekistan in 1930. After the massive earthquake of 1966, the city was restored as the best metropolitan city.

Popular Places
The major tourist attractions include the Zangiota mausoleum, Anbar-bibi mausoleum, Yunus-khan mausoleum, the Kaffali-Shash mausoleum, Barak-khan Madrassah and Kukeldash madrassah (now a museum). Khast-Imam structure is one of the oldest Islamic monuments here.

Tashkent has numerous museums reflecting pre-Uzbek and Uzbek culture. The State Art Museum has a vast collection of Bukharian royal robes, ceramics and paintings. The Museum of Decorative and Applied Arts houses antique jewelry and embroidered wall hangings. The other must sees include the Shayhantaur ensemble, TV tower, Exhibition Hall and Tashkent Metro Subway.

Getting Around
The most convenient mode of transport in the city is the metro train, Tashkent Metro. The rental cars and buses are also easily available. Even, one can book a rental car at the hotel itself, for which, the staff acts as a guide.

Places of Entertainment
A ride in Tashkent Metro Train or a visit to one of the amusement and recreation parks of the city offers a perfect opportunity to chill out. Chorsu Bazaar, an open-air market in Old Tashkent is the best hangout for shopping buffs. The Russian ballet and the Uzbek concerts at the Alisher Navoi Opera and Ballet Theatre take you to another world. The restaurants and night clubs in the city set your night on fire.
