Brief History
Originally the city was a plateau and wooded frontier lying between the kingdom of Cayor and Baol and was uninhabited. An ethnic clan that was the sub group of the Sereer settled here. Known as “None”, the clan still continues to inhabit the south west part of the city. During the French domination, the plateau gained substantial importance. With the setting up of military base in 1864 there, the city began progressing rapidly.

Getting Around
While not many guide books and information on the transportation in and around Thies are available, it was originally a simple railway stoppage on the Dakar-Saint Louis line. Subsequently it became a railway junction and a railway transportation hub to Dakar and Rfuisque. Rail workers in Thies played important role in labour movement in Senegal.
