About TRIPOLI

City Tripoli in Libya

Most important and largest city in Libya, Tripoli is also its capital. With a population of around 1.07 million, it is also the most populous city of the country. Located to the northwest of the country on the edge of desert, Tripoli was founded in the 7th century BC by Phoenicians. Situated on point of rocky land that projects into Mediterranean Sea, it is also the principal sea port as well as the largest commercial centre of Libya.

Brief History
Founded in the 7th century BC by the Phoenicians, the city passed on to the hands of the Greeks and then to Romans during the 2nd Century BC. Raised to the level of separate city by Leptis Magna, the city experienced a phase of decline with the collapse of the Roman Empire. Muslims conquered it during the 8th Century.  Cairo, Egypt, Fatimuds, and Mamluks ruled the city in succession to each other. Spanish domination started in 1510 that ended the domination of barbaric pirates on the city, and the walls and other defences were fortified.

Ottoman Turks occupied the city in 1565 and pirate activities were revived. Broken by Karamanlis in 1711, the rule of Ottoman Turks was re-established in 1835. Battles with USA took place in the early part of 19th century. Italy occupied Tripoli in 1911 and controlled it till 1943. From 1944 to 1951 it remained under British Rule till independence. With the lifting of UN ban over Libya for terrorist activities the place has become easier to travel.
