History
Trujillo, founded in 1556, was the historic site 1813 proclamation by the liberator Simón Bolívar, for independence from Spain. It is a fertile farmland where fruits, maize and cocoa are cultivated. In the olden days it was an important way station between Táchira and Mérida, though now it has been overtaken in commercial importance by the neighbouring city of Valera.

Popular Places
The towering monument of La Virgen de La Paz perched at a height of 1700 m. is the most stunning landmark of this city. Inside the huge statue, which is 46.72 m high and weighs 1200 tons, there are four different points at different level from where visitors can enjoy the panoramic views of the city including the Maracaibo Lake. The attractive city centre of The Plaza Mayor, dotted with stylish buildings and palaces is worth exploring. The impressive equestrian bronze sculpture designed by Francisco Pizarro is an important landmark of this city, which conveys the conquistador’s return to Spain from South America.

Getting Around
Taxis and buses are the popular means of transport in this city and the bus system is extensive and very cheap as gasoline is available at very low prices.

There are many good restaurants and bars to cater to the diverse needs and budgets of the guests. The city has a Bull Ring, where many events including Bullfights, Concerts and cultural fairs are conducted regularly.
