The third largest city of Armenia, Vanadzor city was formerly known as Kirovakan. It is the capital of the Lori Marz province of Armenia and suffered huge damages when the earthquake of 1988 hit Armenia. Today, after much reconstruction, Vanadzor features among the most exquisite places of Armenia.

History of Vanadzor:
The city Vanadzor received its present name in 1992 after a black stone church located on a nearby hill. The opening of the railroad to Tbilisi in 1899 opened the gates to prosperity for Vanadzor which was totally shattered during the Russo-Persian War in 1826. Though it suffered huge setback after the tragic earthquake of 1988, the city’s majority of buildings remained intact. Today, it is one of the most picturesque places in Armenia.

With tombs strewn all over the city, Vanadzor has a lot to offer to the tourists. You can begin your sightseeing trip with the Train Station. At Train Station, one can have a real taste of the Soviet Union. This marvelous and classic example of Soviet architecture has remained untouched since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Right next to the Train Station is the Russian Church which is the first place to visit - if you board a Marshutni for your travel in Vanadzor.  A Nice old church with a golden dome, Russian Church is a must see for tourists. Another popular attraction at Vanadzor is the Karakilisa Church which is located by the river on the north end of the town. A classic example of Vanadzor’s architecture, this church is made of black and orange stone and is popularly known as Karakilisa.

Getting Around in Vanadzor:
Gas operated minibuses known as Marshrutnis are available in plenty in Vanadzor to get around the city. A good guide is to keep some small notes and coins handy in order to pay your journey. However, taxi is certainly a more convenient and practical option for visiting sites.

Places of Entertainment:
Trekking the beautiful hills of Vanadzor is fun filled and exciting. The diverse range of flora and fauna of Vanadzor is exceptionally amazing. One can engage oneself in shopping at the local markets of the town in the evenings and can taste the sumptuous cuisine of Armenia at the local restaurants in the night.
