Country Zambia- The Land of the Victoria Waterfalls

The Republic of Zambia is a land locked country in Southern Africa. Well known for its spectacular landscapes including the Victoria waterfalls, the wild Zambezi River, abundant wild life and raw and unexplored wilderness which draw travelers from all over the world.

History
It was inhabited by the Khoisan hunter-gatherers until around AD 300. In 1888, the British South Africa Company obtained mining rights from king of the Lozi for the area which later became North-Western Rhodesia, which was later merged with North-Eastern Rhodesia after the defeat of the ruling king. The two were merged to form Northern Rhodesia in 1911 and in 1923, the Company ceded control of Northern Rhodesia to the British Government.  Northern Rhodesia became the Republic of Zambia in 1964, with Kenneth Kaunda becoming the first president.

Popular Places
Victoria Waterfalls, known as ‘the greatest known curtain of falling water’, is one of the most important attractions of Zambia. Micro- light flights and trekking are the popular methods to get a closer view of the gushing waterfalls that follow a zigzag pattern to reach the deep gorges below.  Mosi O Tunya National Park is home to many species of wild life including antelope species, zebra, and rhinos.

Getting Around
The travel guide of Zambia features long range buses as the most common and economical mode of transport to guide you round. Minibuses and taxis are also popular modes of local transport. These are cheap and convenient; however there are no fixed rates and you need to negotiate for the best rates.

Places of Entertainment
The capital city of Lusaka flaunts a cosmopolitan flair and has many sky scrapers and trendy shopping malls and entertainment options to its credit. It has a cracking night life well represented by night clubs, discos and pubs. Hop into any nightclub or roadside shebeen to mingle with the fun loving local people who throng to dance the night away to the sounds of rhumba, kwela, techno or even rock 'n roll. The adrenalin freaks should check out the adventure sporting options available in the city of Livingstone including white water rafting, cruise, bungee jumping or river boarding- to list just a few

Currency
The Zambian currency is the Kwacha (ZMK), which in turn is divided into 100 ngwee. Coins are not in circulation these days. Currency exchange facilities are found in the main towns and the latest exchange rates are available in the internet or the financial news papers.
