Amsterdam Holiday Gives New Lease of Life
Visiting Amsterdam with Mother Restored the Lost Energy and Time
My mother and I never had a chance to travel together since childhood, despite her being my best friend. As soon as I entered my teens, illness gripped my mother and she started remaining ill for months at a time. I never realized how my work became my priority and I never had a chance to spend some quality time with my best friend.
My mother had taken this neglect to heart and her condition deteriorated. Last month the doctor advised me to take her out for a change. I knew he was serious. Putting my work aside, the news the doctor told me encouraged me to spend time with my best friend, I took my mother to Amsterdam Holland for a week’s holiday. Since our relatives also stay there, it was the natural and a wise choice to make, and travel to Amsterdam is easy so no hassle or worry for my mum.
There is something in the air of Amsterdam Netherlands, that as soon as we landed, it brought a smile on my best friend’s face, something that I had not seen for a while. Our relatives had arranged for our Amsterdam hotel accommodation in a budget hotel, near to their apartment. Initially I thought it would have been better, if they would have booked our stay in one of the stunning hotels that Amsterdam boasts of, but after seeing the budget hotel, I was happy. It was a nice and a warm place, something my mother instantly liked. I wonder if the youth hostels, bed and breakfast, guesthouse and motels were also kept so well in Amsterdam.
I took mother to Albert Cuyp, Begijnhof, Royal Palace, Anne Frank House, The Royal Palace to mention but a few we also went on a canal boat guide tour, the guides on the cruise really gave you a true feeling of the city of Amsterdam and its history. We had a walk around the streets of Jordaan and Leidseplein and appreciated the beauty and warmth of both the places. I could see the childlike excitement in my mother’s eyes and in the glow of her face. She talked to me a lot, sometimes about her ill health, sometimes about the weather and sometimes about my childhood. It made me realize how much I have lost during all those career-focussed days, months and years.
The trip brought a very positive effect on my mother’s deteriorating health. We came close to each other yet again and this time I made it a point to take her out for a walk and chit-chat on a regular basis. Her love brought new energy in me and I know it brought her a new lease of life also.
