Frankfurt – Financial Centre of Germany

Frankfurt is better known as the financial centre of Germany, but that should not imply that the city has nothing to offer in terms of tourism. Popularly known as Frankfurt am Main, which translates to ‘Frankfurt on the Main’, the city is located on the bank of River Main.

History:
Frankfurt derives its name from the Germanic tribe of the Franks and Furt, an ancient ford of the River Main. The city was an important part of the Holy Roman Empire. The city was also important as the crowning place of a number of German emperors. In the year 1372, Frankfurt became an imperial city. The city experienced and witnessed a series of Napoleonic wars and it was after the death of Napoleon that Franffurt was included in the German Confederation as a free city.

In 1866, Frankfurt was captured by Prussia and by French troops in the First World War. In the World War II, the city was destroyed in aerial bombing, but the city came back to normal position with a new architectural style.

Popular places:
Saint Bartholomeus' Cathedral is one of the highlights of the city of Frankfurt. The foundation of this cathedral was laid on an ancient church in 14th century. St. Paul's Church is among the popular monuments of Germany, as it acted as the seat of first democratic parliament of Germany in the year 1848. St. Katherine's church is another important site of the city.

Alte Oper is the old opera house of the city and was built in 1880. After getting destroyed in the World War II, the house was reconstructed and now it serves as a tourist spot. The Frankfurt Opera is another opera house with international fame in the city. Other exciting features of the city include skyscrapers, which are more than 150 m tall. Commerzbank Tower and MesseTurm are some of these popular skyscrapers.
