Internet is for everyone
Now is the time to be computer literate or be left behind.
Don’t panic; carry on reading the internet is easy here are some easy tips and hints on how to make things easier for you and to take the first steps.
Right, you have a desk top or laptop and you have managed to access the internet, when your internet page opens you will see at the very top the Address bar, this is where you write the URL, this is the address of the page you want to go to.
What a lot of people do, is go to Google for everything, even if they have the URL (Uniform Resource Locator) web address.
This is doubling your work, its like having the address and telephone of a shop you want to visit in London then ringing Directory inquiring to ask for the address and telephone number again, doesn’t make sense, right?
All you have to do is write the sites address in the Address bar at the top of the page
For example to book your hostel or hotel accommodation, you can book on Hostels247.com
The URL (Uniform Resource Locator) means the web address www.hostels247.com
At the top of the page write the address, then press enter, you go to the Home page of the site, from there you can check the availability and book which ever accommodation you like.
Top Tip
Be aware that not everything on the internet is true, and not all sites on the internet are genuine. Be careful how you give out your personal information on internet.
For anything on the Internet, that you will use your credit/debit card to pay, always check that at the beginning of the payment page address where you will pay, it has https the “s” stands for secure, it means that all the information added on that page, will be encrypted so no-one can see your payment details, it’s a bit like you making sure that no-one knows your Pin number for your Credit/debit card
For example the payment page on Hostels247.com starts with https
https://www.hostels247.com/
Even though you are buying or doing business over the Internet, the company should still exist in the real world and therefore they should have a contact telephone number and Street address in case you want to contact them.
Searching on the Internet for what you want
If you do not have the address of the site you want to visit, or you want some information, this is when Google, Bing, Yahoo Search and other are used, to find the answer to your question or find the site you are looking for
Again write the address of the Search Engine you want to use for example
www.google.com
www.bing.com
www.search.yahoo.com
In the middle of all the pages you will see a search bar, write what you want to find inside here and then click on search or press enter.
You will see the results, there will be thousands of results but again do not Panic!
Look at the results, you have a small snippet of what the different page results are so you don’t have to open every page.
The top sentence is the Title of the page/website it tells you what the website is about in a few words, the second part is a slightly more details description about the website and it also highlights the words that you searched for, this helps you to decide whether the page is what you are looking for and at the bottom is the address for the site.
If you want to go to the site just click the title and you go straight to the page
For example for Hostels247 you would see

This is just a quick guide on how to search and go to a website, there are countless other things that can be done on the internet, you can virtually search for anything, and do nearly anything online so start here and begin to get computer literate, you will be surprised at how easy it is.
