What to do and How to get around in London by Viajeguy

London is a world class city with a myriad of things to see and do. It matters not if you are a first time visitor or a returning veteran; there is always something new to do in London. The following suggestions should help you to get the most out of your own London visit.

  • Be flexible when you visit London. Arrive with a list of places to visit and things to do, but don’t come with a rigid itinerary. Be prepared to juggle your schedule to match London’s slightly unpredictable weather. Save outdoor venues for those sunny or at least bright days & fit museums and shopping into those wet or rainy days. Bring a small umbrella for those wet moments & flow around the weather. Rain in the morning can turn out to be sun in the afternoon.
  • Maximize your time during your London visit. Familiarize yourself with the opening hours of the various museums. Many have one or two weekdays during which they remain open late. This creates a perfect opportunity to cram more places into your London itinerary ( and encounter smaller crowds at certain museums ).
  • Above all things, London is a walking city. Pick up a pocket street map & hit the streets. Identify the main streets, but be sure to venture upon the small parallel streets which are quieter, less-crowed, and have their own sights to see. Don’t be taken back by London’s zigzag streets and lanes. You’ll pop out on a familiar street sooner or later.
  • Utilize the London Underground to hop from one side of town to the other. Busses are good for late night travel after the Underground closes and for short hops. If you’re in London for a week or more, consider an Oyster Card which offers the best value & is good on both the Underground & busses. Taxis are a bit expensive, but are useful when rushing to the theater or dinner.
  • Avoid purchasing theater tickets from touts . . . their seats are cheap, but often offer limited views. Purchase theater seats from your hotel concierge, or the official theater ticket agency located in Leicester Square. Remember, you can also get seats the day of a performance by stopping at the box office.
  • During peak season, it is useful to pre-purchase admission tickets for venues such as the Tower of London, Madam Tussauds, & the London Dungeon so as to avoid the long queues at the door. If you’re planning on taking a ride on the London Eye, keep an “eye” open for good weather to go with the fantastic views. Also consider an evening ride.
