Spanish Mishap Part 1
My Spanish Mishap, Part I - La Rambles Barcelona where my Bag was Stolen
It happens to the best of us and you hear about it all the time. For me, it happened as I sat in a restaurant off La Rambles on the last day of my 5 day trip. I was there with two American girls I’d met at university in England. We were just finishing a glass of wine when I was asked to double check our flight time. Our stay in Barcelona had been eventful and fun but we were all excited about returning to our homes (or temporary homes) for the holidays.
Once I’d checked our flight time, I reassured them that we had a few hours to collect our things from the storage room at the hostel, take the underground to the airport and check in about an hour and a half before our flight. Unfortunately for me, I wouldn’t make the flight after all. I had placed my bag not on the chair beside me where it had been, but at my feet instead. In a time frame of less than two minutes, I had the sudden realization that my bag was no longer next to me. Jumping up, I exclaimed that my bag had gone missing.
Tip #1: Be aware of your surroundings. To this day I believe that someone that work in the restaurant was involved with the steeling of my bag, which I reluctantly will tell you now contained my wallet, with all my identification, my passport, my credit cards, my flight ticket, my cell phone, my sketchbook, and over two hundred euro worth of gifts I’d purchased that day. The police were of little help, except for the report which my insurance would use to reimburse me for my losses. Tip #2: Never travel without insurance. At the realization that I was going nowhere, my two traveling partners said goodbye and I began a long journey of my own, alone.
