Travel Like a Local
Travel The World Like a Local
To a lot of people this may seem like a contradiction, how can you travel the World and also be a local. Travelling means going to new places and visiting different cities, being a local means you live in that city so how can you do both?
The key to travelling the world like a local is to embrace the new city or destination, the culture, people the food everything, be ready for new experience and also be able to think on your feet and be bold, don’t let people distract you or fool you into going somewhere or doing something you didn’t set out in doing.
It’s easy if you think about it, for the travelling part just choose a destination, book your flight and hotel or hostels accommodation then pack your bags and your ready for your holiday to begin.
Now the part about being a local, this is also easy, you just need to use your common sense, you may be in a new city or somewhere different but there is no point making yourself look like a gullible tourist and stand out like a sore thumb.
The key to looking like a local is to act and know where you are going to be bold without being arrogant and most of all be aware of your surroundings, just like you would do in your own neighbourhood or city. Use landmarks to remember where you are going and to mark where certain places are.
Walk around and get to know the local area where you are staying, this you should do on the day you arrive, at least half and hour in each direction, you will be surprised that half an hour in each directions covers a huge area, making it easy to always know what direction is home, in this case where you are staying.
By knowing the local area, you will begin to feel at home, know where the local shops, supermarket, chemist, cafes and restaurants are, depending on the city there may be more or less local amenities, but every city will have some, and knowing where they are helps you feel at home, instead of paying high prices in the Hotel shop and restaurant, you can walk down the road and buy lots more for your money in a local shop or sit down and relax in a cafe round the corner, just like a local.
