Travel to Canterbury Cathedral from London
Canterbury, Kent in South East of the United Kingdom is a Unique and Compact City, world famous for its Castle, Roman Walls surrounding the city, and most of all the beautiful Cathedral in the centre of the city (Canterbury Cathedral).
Travelling to Canterbury from London is easy, you can take a direct train from many central London stations straight to Canterbury, for example a direct train from London Bridge to Canterbury East only takes an hour and a half.
If you want to spend a weekend break or short holiday in Canterbury there are plenty of accommodation options from students bunk bed accommodation in Hostels to bed and breakfast, budget hotels and luxury hotels.
On leaving Canterbury East train Station you cross a small foot bridge and walk along the pathway which follows the old Roman walls to get to the city centre, alternatively you can take a taxi which costs around £6.
The city centre consists of Cobbled streets, combined with the usual high street shops, fast food restaurants and Cafes, hidden behind these streets is what most people come to Canterbury to see, Canterbury Cathedral.
Once you turn into small central area, on most days you are greeted by a likable street busker and then your eyes catch a glimpse of the impressive entrance to the Canterbury Cathedral Courtyard, through the huge gateway Christchurch Gate, you can see the Cathedral straight ahead with small buildings all around the outskirts of the Courtyard area.
There is an entrance fee to visit the Cathedral and the Grounds, which helps towards the upkeep of this beautiful place.
Canterbury Cathedral is the spiritual home for the Archbishop of Canterbury, the head of the Anglican Church.
Walking towards the Canterbury Cathedral the splendour, grandeur and intricate architecture hit you straight away and this is just the outside of the Cathedral.
Entering the main doors of Canterbury Cathedral you are offered a small map to guide you round the Cathedral, there are also tour guides on hand to explain everything. But you can walk around by yourself; there are small plates by every statue and important points of interest so a self guided tour is easy and very enjoyable.
The architecture inside Canterbury Cathedral is breath taking, high ceilings, ornate pillars and statues not to mention the colourful intricate stain glass windows that let through streams of coloured light to brighten every corner of the Cathedral. Spot lights are also placed around to highlight the pillars, walls and ceiling.
The Cathedral has several services throughout the week and the central part of the Cathedral where the services are held is closed to general visitors during this time.
It must be said that the services are truly unrivalled and hearing the choir sing is very spiritual and uplifting. The music echoes in what seems like perfect acoustic harmony with the Cathedrals whole building, making each hymn seem like its being sung my the angles themselves.
Canterbury Cathedral is can not be missed and is a definite must whether your going to join a service and worship, appreciate the architecture or just take a few pictures to show the kids or your parents. |
