Reliving the Past on the Streets of New Delhi
My best friend, Seema and I had completed our masters from a college in New Delhi, the capital of our country, India. Oh, who can forget that carefree time of college days? The days that went by wandering on the streets of Chandni Chowk for shopping, the days of sitting and chatting near India Gate after a tiring day, or in Central Park, Cannaught Circus, the moments of tasting the exotic food of Lajpat Nagar and Gol Market, the time spent in searching hostels accommodation and apartments in Greater Kailash, the days gone in the serene tranquillity of the famous Akshardham Temple, Lotus Temple and Bangla Sahib Gurudwara, all came to life in front of my eyes. These and so many other days and moments that are now lost, perhaps lost forever.
Both of us had stopped talking and had broken up over a small fight when we were about to complete our masters. The fight blew out of proportion and I swore not to see her again, ever in life. Both of us were not ready to budge from our stand despite continuous efforts from our common friends. We both went ahead with our jobs to different cities and it has now been three years that we haven’t seen each other.
I was back in Delhi for an official travel and had my accommodation arranged in one of the luxury hotels of Central Delhi. My heart forced me to think of the hostel accommodation, and budget hotels days that we spent together. We shared everything, from a pair of jeans to bangles, from make up kit to food, from salwar-kameez to footwear, in other words almost everything.
Now that my best friend was also in Delhi for a holiday, my fingers dialled her number a couple of times and disconnected the call before she could even pick up. Would she talk to me? How would I start the conversation? Should I say sorry? Engrossed in these thoughts, I noticed by phone was ringing. It was her number. My heart skipped a beat.
I answered the call and then the time flew, as it always does, when we are together. We decided to meet at Greater Kailash M Block market and have a nice time at Barista followed by Dinner at Yo China! I am looking forward to this meeting now, I’m sure we can both pot the past to rest and continue into the future as friends once again just like the days long ago when we were studying.
