Canottaggio Lombardia in London for Women's Eights Head
On Saturday 1 March 2008 at 10am, the start of the Annual Rowing Event on the River Thames, London, England, the Women's Eights Regatta 2008 began. Teams from around the World gathered to this annual event to prove who is the fastest, this year saw 251 crews enter the race.
One of these International crews was from Italy called IDROGENO ROSA LOMBARDIA, this year headed by Mr Antonio Bassi the Canottaggio Lombardia president brought to the race a very young crew, a mix of senior and junior crew members.
The Crew members were: Alessandra Caraffini - Elisa Scapolo - Valentina Calabrese - Giulia Pollini -Elisa Stranges -Deborah Battagin - Sabrina Noseda -Ambra Roversi- are the names of the girls and Michael Wale the "English" Cox.
All the girls of the crew were from Lombardia region in Italy one of the best regions for rowing in Italy, due to the amount of lakes and rivers allowing easy access rowing practice and in 2003 the world rowing championship was in Milano and in 2007 the international junior regatta Coupe De La Junesse was at Varese Lake.
Since the crew was a new subscriber they were made to start in the most crowded part of the race, which causes problems for overtaking and mutual respect for others, but if you are among the first to go all have the opportunity to make the most of your field, not with standing this handicap they still performed well in the race.
The starting position of the IDROGENO ROSA LOMBARDIA crew was 13th; they finished in 14th place out of 251 crews, the second best overseas crew, only pushed into second best position due to a yellow card and 5 second penalty incurred by the crew at the start of the race, inflicted by a starter Idrogenorosa.
“It was a pity to be pushed into second best overseas crew, but we are still very happy with the result that this years young crew has produced” said Mr Antonio Bassi when asked about the performance of his crew.
“The Course was not an easy one for a young crew as the River Thames has many curves and bends to navigate” said Mr Antonio Bassi when asked about the River Thames Course.
“Next year is another year, which will give the possibility to young and senior crews to immerse in the atmosphere of a major international competition like the Women's Eights Regatta in London” Said Ferruccio Calegari Press FIC Lombardy
When asked, all the crew member had positive feedback about the Women's Eights Regatta 2008 and were grateful for the opportunity to participate in an International Rowing Event.
Once the competition was over the Lombardy group had time to enjoy an evening out in Leicester Square, West End of London. And the following day they had a day’s sight seeing in London and a ride on the Famous London Open Top Bus.
For the second year in the row, the Lombardy Group stayed at Adamotel, near Gloucester Road and Earls Court, due to easy access to the course.
