Happy 90th Birthday Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela’s the world’s statesman and the former South African’s president 90th Birthday Celebration and Concert on Friday 27 June 2008, in Hyde Park London was a resounding success, with Tens of Thousands of admiring fans who travelled from across the UK and worldwide for the open air concert in Hyde Park hosted by Will Smith.
As well as celebrating Nelson Mandela’s 90th Birthday the concert also raised funds for Mr Mandela's HIV/Aids charity.
The numerous musicians and stars included Geri Halliwell, Lewis Hamilton, Annie Lennox, Leona Lewis, Amy Winehouse, Sugarbabes, Razorlight and Simple Minds. Many African artists also flew in for the birthday extravaganza, including Papa Wemba of DR Congo, Josh Groban and the Soweto Gospel Choir, and South African singers Loyiso and Kurt Darren.
Many well known celebrities and world leaders from Oprah Winfrey to formed US President Bill Clinton were also in attendance.
The evening was brought to a close by a rendition of Free Nelson Mandela led by Amy Winehouse, with all the other stars and musicians joining in on stage, it was a perfect close for an amazing night of entertainment.
Mandela was released from prison in 1990 after spending 27 years behind bars. He was elected South Africa’s first black president in 1994 and retired from politics in 1999. He has since campaigned to prevent the spread of AIDS.
Proceeds from the show — for which there were 46,664 tickets — are going to 46664, the AIDS charity named for the number Mandela wore in prison.
Mandela has lead an exemplary life, he never lost hope even after 27 years in prison, he’s truly a Worlds Statesman.
“Where there is poverty and sickness including AIDS, where human beings are being oppressed, there is more work to be done,” Mandela said. “Our work is for freedom for all.
“We say tonight after nearly 90 years of life, it is time for new hands to lift the burdens. It is in your hands now.”
