About ALTOS
City Altos in Paraguay- Enjoy the Mythical Charm of the Yore
One of the oldest cities in Paraguay, Altos is also known as the “Terrace of the country” in reference to its high altitude. Well known for hand carved arts and crafts including masks and mythological figurines, Altos is a different world altogether. Surrounded by a chain of mountains and lush green valleys rich in medicinal plants and coffee plantations, Altos is a visual feast to any ordinary pair of eyes.
History
There is conflicting information regarding the origin of this city. According to some, the city was founded by Domingo Martínez de Irala on August 10, 1538 while the other version tells that it was Friar Luis de Bolaños founded it in 1580. The infamous Nazi scientist and medical doctor, Joseph Mengele who experimented in the Nazi concentration camps, lived in secrecy in Altos to evade arrest.

There are many interesting historical monuments and cultural attractions in this city. The Jesuist church of Sam Lorenzo at the city centre is undeniably the most important landmark of this city. The Saldivar Stream, that flows through a natural reserve spread over 4 hectares is a great spot for outdoor leisure activities like fishing and boating. This city is home to several national parks, each with unique characteristics. The Defensores del Chaco National Park is the largest in the whole of Paraguay and the hill Cerro León, the highest point in the northern region of Paraguay is located within the park.
Getting around:
The travel guide of this city put the public transport buses at the forefront as the easiest and cheapest modes of transport though the services could be erratic. Very often there are no designated bus stops either and all you need to do is to stretch your arms to stop a bus anywhere. Metered Taxis are the most efficient and reliable form of transportation in this city. Also there are well equipped boats that ply in the waterways connecting various destinations.
