Wadi Mousa – Valley of Moses with Bedouin Settlement
Wad Mousa is a small town near Petra, the historical city of Jordan and one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The town belongs to the Aqaba Governorate in the southern part of Jordan. The importance of the town has emerged because of its closeness to a number of historic excavation sites.
History
Wadi Mousa was initially the name of the valley in the region from which the town derived its name. The history of this town is no different from that of Petra, as the town was also ruled by the Nabataeans in the beginning. During early Biblical times, the Moses struck the rock to bring forth water in the form of springs. In modern age, the town is inhabited by a number of tribes, the Hassanat being the largest one. Other tribes and families include Nawafleh, Amarat, Fallahat, Salameen and many more.
The floods from the high mountains near the town destroyed most of its bridges and roads in 2001. However, the condition has been revived and new dams have been constructed to contain enough water in case of floods.
Popular Places
The excavations in the year 1995 accidentally discovered a beautiful ancient palace, which is believed to belong to the Nabataean rulers. The palace consists of a decorated colonnade and frescoes in huge number. Apart from them, one of the finest mosaics of Jordan has been discovered at this palace. The Roman bath system was another part discovered in the premises, along with an arch that has been demolished recently.
Wadi Mousa Crusader Palace is another site worth visiting. One can also think of planning a trip to Petra, the nearby city that has been declared one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
