About MASERU
City Maseru in Lesotho
Capital of Lesotho as well as the Maseru District, Maseru is located on the bank of Caledon River bordering South Africa. It is the only sizable city in Lesotho with a population of around 230 thousand. Initially the city was established as one of the police camps and was made the capital of Lesotho after it became the British Protectorate in 1869 and the only city for travel in Lesotho.
Accommodation
Six hotels are there for accommodating visitors in Maseru and a couple of them also have casino facilities. Hotels are located near the Basotho Hat Shop at the entrance of the city that is one of the popular sources for collection of souvenirs. There is no bed and breakfast joint in Maseru as such and guest houses are only available in form of rental homes.
Brief History
After independence of Lesotho in 1966, Maseru continued to have its status as the capital of the State. Name of the city was inspired by the name “Sesotho” that meant “place of the red sandstone”. Founded as a small police camp in 1869 that followed the conclusion of Free State Basotho Wars. Located 24 kilometers that is around 15 miles west of Basotho Kings domain and soon a big market grew around the area attracting people to travel in the city.
Geography
Located in northwest Lesotho on the South African border, Maseru is flanked by Mohokare River. Landscape of the city represents a shallow valley at the foot of the Hlabeng-Sa-Likhama on the foothills of Maloti Mountains. Elevation of the city is about 1,600 meters or 5,200 feet above the sea level. Area of the city is around 138 square kilometers.
Climate
Climate of Maseru is temperate with hot and rainy summers and cold and dry winter. Average mean daily temperature during the summer stands at 220 Celsius while the average mean temperature during the winter stands at 90 Celsius. Average rainfall ranges from 7 mm in the month of June to 141 mm in the month of February.
Getting Around
Railway and road bridges across the Mokohare River connecting the northern commercial district to Marseilles in South Africa and railway track from there to Bloemfontein is the only 2.6 kilometers long train track in the city. Usually the guide book will refer to the Kingsway road that joins the Mejametalana Airport with Royal Palace in Maseru that was the first paved road in Lesotho. A couple of roads lead from outside of Maseru to northeast and main south of Mazenod and Roma. Moshoeshoe is the International Airport near the city.
Main Attractions
Lancer’s Gap, Sani Pass, Afri-Ski resort, Thaba Bosiu, Maluti Mountains, and Katse dam are some of the places visitors will like to travel. Staying in one of the six hotels in Maseru would be convenient as they provide conducted tours and travels. However, the travel won’t be quick and smooth owing to rugged terrains in the city. Other places of interest are Malealea, Semonkong, and Sehalabathebe National Park as well as the exotic Sani Pass
Currency
Currency of Lesotho, Loti, is also the currency in Maseru. However, the South African currency is also accepted. Current exchange rate is one USD equals 7.723 Loti but it is better looking for the exchange news relating to currency exchange market since the exchange rates are highly volatile.
