Lae is the second largest city of Papua New Guinea and the capital of Morobe Province. Touted as the industrial capital of the country, Lae, takes credit to the largest port in the country and the University of Technology. Located at the Highlands Highway, which is the main gateway from the Highlands region to the coast, Lae plays an important role in the economic development of the country.

History
The town of Lae sprang up around an airstrip during the frenzied gold rush period of the 1920s. Cargo, which arrived in Lae was taken to the gold fields in Wau by air. During World War II, the town was occupied by the Empire of Japan and made one of the most strategic Japanese bases in New Guinea. After weeks of heavy fighting the Japanese were defeated and the town fell to the Allies on September 16.

The attractive streets teeming with friendly and smiling local folks add up to its façade. No matter whether you wish to mingle with the locals, enjoy a leisurely stroll or enjoy shop hopping or sample its cuisine, it is fun and pleasure. There are various interesting sights to see in Lae. The Botanical Gardens set up amidst a patch of rainforest has a rich orchid collection apart from various species of birds and rare butterflies. Near the botanical gardens lies the Lae War Cemetery, maintained by the Australian Government.  You can pay tribute at the graves of the soldiers who lost their lives in World War II. In case you are looking for something really adventurous, hit Mt Lunaman, laced with secret tunnels and caves which was a lookout point used by the Germans during the World war.

Getting around:
Local buses and passenger boats are the cheapest and the most common modes of transport to get around Lae. A good guide is to keep some small notes and coins handy to pay the exact fares for the bus. You can also explore this town on foot or in taxis.

Places of Entertainment:
The casual and windswept Yacht Club, located right at the harbour is a great place to drink, eat or to mingle with the locals and to watch people. There are clubs that serve cheap beer and Chinese cuisine. Some clubs would have indoor games like snooker. Enjoy live music or waltz with your buddies to the local reggae, R&B or hip-hop at these lively night party dens.
