Salalah – The Vacation Capital of Oman

Salalah receives thousands of tourists every year mainly because of its unspoiled beaches perfect for scuba diving, sailing, canoeing, diving and jet skiing. Other reasons why Salalah is a preferred tourist destination for tourists visiting Middle East are its unpolluted air, high rolling seas, cool misty climate and lush green ambience.

History of Salalah:
The trade of frankincense made Salalah an important and strategic place in Oman. Not only this trade benefitted the city but also made Oman rich and prosperous. The city was controlled by the Omani sultans during the 19th century and became the effective capital of Oman in 1932. It was in 1970, after the deposition of Sultan Said that the capital of Oman was shifted to from Salalah to Muscat. 

Popular Places and Attractions:
What makes Salalah unique is its location itself. Located in the south of desert kingdom Oman, Salalah is surrounded by desert and mountains. One of the most popular tourist attractions of this city is Nabi Ayoub’s Tomb or Job’s tomb. Located on the Jable Ittin mountain range, one can find the remains of the prophet at Job’s tomb. Outlining the coast of Salalah is another tourist attraction Mughsail, a beautiful beach surrounded by blowholes and cliff.

The ruins of Khor Rori, considered as the most important pre Islamic settlement in Dhofar region, offer panoramic view of the sea. It displays Al Musnad writings, manuscripts and coins that date back to the 11th century. Other places worth a visit in Salalah are Aim Homran, The Ayn Razat, Wadi Darbat, etc.

Getting Around in Salalah:
Your tourist guide will tell you that most of the places of interest in Salalah are close to each other and hence walking around can be a good idea. You will however also find unmetered Omani taxis buzzing around in the city.

Places of Entertainment:
Some of the places where you can satisfy your palette with lip smacking dishes are Hassan Bin Thabit Restaurant, Al Fareed Restaurant, Ittin Café, Al Khutaini, Hazza Al hoqani, Lebanese House, Browniz, etc. 

Some popular Salalah souvenirs are frankincense, perfumes, handcrafts such as baskets and woven textiles, silver and gold jewellery, etc. For buying fish, meat, etc, Fish, Meat and Vegetable Souk is the right place. Lulu Shopping Centre is considered to be the best supermarket in Salalah. Centrepoint, a shopping mall, caters to men’s and women’s fashion needs. 

Accommodation Options:
Some of the hotels where you can book your stay in Salalah are Crowne Plaza Resort, The Hilton Salalah Resort, Haffah House, Dhofar Hotel, etc. Since Salalah is a small city, other accommodation options such as youth hostels, budget hotels, bed and breakfast lodgings, guesthouses, etc are largely not available.
