City Bishkek – Young Soviet City of Kyrgyzstan

City Bishkek is the best example of a modern and well-planned Soviet city, with a stunning backdrop of high mountains, belonging to the Tien Shan range of mountains. Apart from being the capital city of Kyrgyzstan (Kyrgyz Republic of Soviet union), it is also the largest city is the country and can be counted among the youngest Soviet cities to come into existence.

History
The region known as Bishkek used to be one of the small midway stops for the travellers on the Silk Route. It was in 1825 that Uzbek Khan built a mud fort at the location that was taken over by the Russian Tsarists in 1862. Russian peasants settled down in the area, after it was converted into a town called Pishpek in 1887. When the Kirghiz ASSR was established in 1926, the town became its capital with the name of Frunze. In 1991, not only the city was named Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan also gained independent due to the fragmentation of the Soviet Union.    

Popular Places
Ala-Too Square is among the popular monuments of the city worth visiting. Panfilov Park, National Historical Museum, Dubovy Park and Frunzwe House-Museum are among other top attractions of the city. Zhirgal Banya, Orthodox Church, Victory Square and Log House can also be considered worth a visit in Bishkek. 

Getting Around
Buses, electrical trolley buses and public vans form the public transportation for the city. In addition, one can hire taxi cabs to get around the city. You can prefer to have a guide to travel around the city conveniently.

Places of Entertainment
You can visit Dor Doi Bazaar and Osh Bazaar in the city to find variety of goods. Hats and carpets are among the bestselling items in the city markets and you can also find variety of souvenirs available at inexpensive prices.

Besh barmak, bread, potatoes and rice are among the main contents of the foods served at city’s restaurants. Exciting nightlife venues, including discos and live music venues, can be found in different parts of the city. Hiking and other adventure activities can be enjoyed at the nearby mountain area.

Kyrgyz and Russian are the two main languages spoken in the city. 

Currency
Kyrgyzstani Som (KGS) is the official currency of the city and you are recommended to check the exchange rates from online news and updates. The Som can be divided into 100 tiyin.
