Bridgetown, the capital and the largest city in Barbados has always been famous for its post card pretty beaches, cobalt blue waters and miles of golden sand. Though the sea and the sand remain its principal calling cards, Bridge town has many other things to do and see.

The quaint buildings and old fashioned warehouses that rub shoulders with the modern office complexes and shopping arcades ensure the best of both the worlds. Bridge town has an impressive leisure activity list, monopolized by beach activities like snorkelling and diving. Catamaran cruises, dinner cruises, museums, and a cracking night life are some of the attractions in this city.

History
Before the British landed in this island, this city was home to the indigenous people of the Caribbean known as the Arawak, who is thought to have constructed a primitive bridge, which probably gave the city its name.

 Popular Places
 This sea side city of Bridgetown has many interesting  tourist places including the 17th century St. Michael’s cathedral, which is famous for its many original inscriptions and a single-hand clock. Check out the Nidhe Israel synagogue, built in 1654 by the Jews from Brazil, which is one of the oldest synagogues in the Western Hemisphere.

Atlantis Seatrec boat cruise is a great bet to take an exciting underwater jaunt to explore the enchanting, marine life without ever stepping into the waters in this glass bottomed vessel that would ensure the close up views of the corals and the brilliantly coloured fishes. The cricket buffs would find a trip to Oval cricket ground, an overwhelming experience. There are many reclusive and spectacular beaches including the paradise beach and the Brighton Beach, which are safe for swimming or surfing.

Getting Around
Buses are cheaper and faster means of transportation, a good guide is to keep some change handy to pay for your fares. Taxis are also available. Car hire is a better option to explore the city at your own pace though you would be required to purchase a temporary Barbados drivers license that cost £5.

Places of Entertainment   
 Baxter's Road is a popular hang out in this city. The street is smattered with rum shops and small eateries that remain open all night. Soak up the Bajan culture in this quaint street where you can enjoy the local cuisines and music or mingle with the fun loving native folks. There are many restaurants that serve lips smacking delicacies fish and seafood preparations, salad and sandwiches. Shopping is also an equally diverse experience in this city. From small, hole- in the- wall shops and way side vendors of the Swan street and Tudor Street to the posh duty paid shops in the Broad Street, this city has it all and more.  Bridge town has a lively night life well represented by live bands and DJ mixes.
