City Brufut – Picturesque Fishing Village of Gambia

A place of scenic beauty and serene sea waters; Brufut is a little fishing village of Gambia which shares its border with Senegal. Lying along the Atlantic coast, Brufut is known for its towering palm trees that stand astoundingly within the city. History
The history of Brufut dates back to 9th-10th centuries when Gambia was dominated by Arab traders. An important city in the trans-Saharan trade circuit, the city became a landmark under the rule of Mansa Kankan Musa of Mali Empire. In the 16th century it was annexed by Portugal succeeded by Jakub Kettler of Courland. Seventeenth century witnessed an ownership tussle between France and England for the Brufut city followed by the British control on the city in 1889. In 1965, the small fishing village Brufut became a prominent city with the independence of Gambia.

Popular Places
Being an old fishing village, Brufut gives the tourists, the fulfilling experience of fishing to a satiating extent. In addition to this activity, other major attractions in the city are river cruising, bird watching, village tours, African wrestling, trekking, camel riding and horse riding.

Jeep Safari takes around the travellers to beaches, farms and forest parks. A three day bird watching safari to Makasutu Cultural Forest, boat trip and a tour to craft market is also not to be missed. The nearby getaways of tourist interests include the capital city Banjul, the beach and botanical garden in Cape Point and the sandy beaches and bar restaurants in Kotu.

Getting Around
The most easily available and economic mode of transport in the city is bush taxi also known as ‘tankatank’ in the local jargon, which is generally yellow in colour with two thick green stripes. Other popular mediums to travel within the city are boats and cruises. It is always recommended to hire a tour guide to avoid any kind of inconvenience.

Places of Entertainment
There is wide variety of bar restaurants in Brufut serving a diverse range of cuisines from Lebanese, Italian to Gambian. The specialty here is the delicious sea-food (Atlantic prawns, butterfish, ladyfish, snapper and lobster), domoda, benachin, chicken yassa and superkanja available in almost every food joint. Brufut food restaurants cater to the needs of even vegetarians quite well.

Casinos, stage shows and live orchestra in the clubs, bars and restaurants make the night lively for all the tourists. Gambit, souvenirs, woodcarvings, gold and silver jewellery, handbags and handicraft items are some of the purchases that turn a craft market trip memorable.

The main official language of Brufut is English. Many local residents also use native tribal dialects for conversation.
