History
The early days of colonization by various powers including the Dutch, Portuguese, Arabs and the British came to an end in 1948, when Sri Lanka became an independent Republic from being an erstwhile English colony. The ethnic unrest that span 20 long years, left this city in shambles.  From forced exodus of minority community to ethnic tensions an mob fury, it was a black chapter in this city’s history.

The Jaffna peninsula is famous for its lime stone cliffs, palm dotted beaches and excellent fishing spots. The friendly community and a pleasant climate make it a favourite tourist spot of all times.

Getting Around
The Jaffna travel guide lists taxi or van hire as the most convenient and value for money option to travel around this city. Most of the drivers speak English and are friendly. Around 130km of drive would cover almost all important sights of this tiny island. There are buses and mini buses to ensure a regular transportation network

Jaffna has an interesting night life in the form of wine bars and garden taverns where you can chill out with your friends. There are many theatres, live entertainment options and cultural performances to add up to your night fun.
