About LA LIBERTAD
La Libertad –El Salvadorian Surfing Capital
La Libertad, also nicknamed as the “Way to California”, is a port city located in south-western El Salvador. Its beaches, seafood and surfing facilities make it a popular tourist destination.
History
La Libertad got recognition as an El Salvadorian department in the year 1865. During that time, it was called as the “New City of San Salvador”. Its port facilities and prime location near San Salvador led to its development during the late 19th century. It was a major shipping outlet for a particular kind of balsam produced in its coastal forests. The port closed its commercial operations in 1976, but continues to remain a major shipping port.
Popular Places and Attractions
La Libertad is a major surfing destination all across Central America. La Punta, a major surfing point is well-known for its pulsing, fast, hollow and over half-a-minute waves. There are also a number of great beaches around such as Conchalio, El Cochal, San Blas, El Majahual and El Sunzal. El Sunzal comes just next to La Punta in terms of surfing popularity. It is also well-known for its relaxed ambience and numerous dining options. El Zonte, Punta Roca, La Paz and La Bocana are other popular surfing destinations. The eastern beach of Playa San Diego is an ideal place for sunbathing.
El Canopy is very popular amongst tourists for its unique forest canopy tours. One can use cables for hanging from heights or sliding between subsequent tree stations. Walter Thilo Deninger, a national park is also located nearby and consists of many endangered species. One of its trails, the El Mirador, offers spectacular views of Pacific Ocean. The cave of “Encanto” is another attraction that can be seen from here.
The archaeological ruins of “The Bell of San Andres” and “Joya De Seren” are important sites for world history. One can find three pyramids in San Andres with the tallest of them being in the shape of a bell and covered by ashes of volcanic eruption. “Joya De Seren” is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it reflects the life of the Mayan who lived here more than 1,400 years ago.
