Limbourg City – A Travel through Time in the Rural Exuberance
Ample historic antiques, in existence from the Roman times, Limbourg city in the eastern province of Liege, Belgium makes visitors retraced to the ancient times.
History:
Limbourg city is situated by the river Vesdre and gets its name from “Linden – a lime tree” and “Burg – a Fortified town”. It was the capital of the Duchy of Limburg.
The history of Limbourg is marked by numerous sieges between the 16th and 18th centuries. The municipality of Limbourg in modern Belgium was made in 1976 and it acquired the “CITY” status and hence the name “Limbourg City”.
Popular places:
A seemingly grey Limbourg city, spread across 25 km2, offers its visitors a blend of medieval and modern times. The upper town above the river Vesdre, which usually attracts visitors, gives a sense of the historical times and the charm of the countryside of the lower town is truly captivating.
The Place Saint-Georges and the Church, accredited as Walloon Heritage Site, offers visitors an impression of the 18th century and besides render a magnificent view of the Vesdre valley. The village of Goe in the lower town of Dolhain, boasts of the ancient Gileppe Dam. Either a walk over the dam or the boat sail on the lake or the view from the tower, which is 7,760 meters high, next to the dam is incredible. The huge sculpture of Lion overlooking into the lake is a masterpiece by Boure.
Arvo, the erstwhile Town Hall, presents a model of Limbourg in 1632 and also annually exhibits plastic arts on the first floor from May to September.

The true pleasure from the picturesque surroundings is derived from walking around and the small town of Limbourg can easily be covered by foot, travel around the city is easy you don't really need a map to guide you. The city has Marked Walks enabling visitors reach destinations with ease.

Carting enthusiasts can go on a ride at the Hurricane Karting in the town of Dolhain. The month of February marks the fun of Folklore Carnival in the city. The frequent events and concerts at Le Kursaal make the city a very lively place. Sipping coffee or the native Kiki de Limbourg at the square in the quiet evenings can be very relaxing.
