Sana’a – First Destination for Travellers to Yemen
Sana’a is the capital city and the largest one in Yemen. Apart from that, it is considered the first destination for the travellers to visit in the country. Located in the Yemeni Mountains, the city is capable of fascinating the visitors with its unique architecture and a number of attractions.
History:
Sana’a dates back to the Sabaean Dynasty that existed way back in the 6th century BC. However, the references to the city in the form of inscriptions can be found belonging to the 1st century AD. It was in the beginning of the 6th century AD that the city became the capital of the Himyarite Kingdom. The city emerged as a powerful government seat during Islamic rule and continued to remain one of the well-known Yemeni cities for long. In the 16th century, the Mamelukes ruled the city for a short time period. Soon, the city came under the Ottoman Empire that lasted till the 20th century. The city became the capital of the Yemen Arab Republic in 1962 and that of unified Yemen in 1990.

The old city of Sana’a, due to its architectural wonders, has been included in the World Heritage List. Apart from the city walls, one can think of visiting some of the many mosques, baths and old houses located in this part of the city. Jami' al-Kabir is one of the most famous mosques in the city. Yemen Gate is another place worth visiting. Souk al-Milh is the marketplace, known for selling salt, spices, resins, cotton, silverware and many more items.
Quarter of Beer al-Azab is another important site in the city and one can also think of visiting The Jewish Quarter. The ruins of the palace of Ghamdan, considered as the first skyscraper in the world, is an interesting attraction offered by the city.
