History
Tiraspol was founded in 600 B.C as Miletus’ colony. The Romans reached here and enabled the first real development of the region. It played the role of a buffer region between the Moldavians and the Tatars, during Middle Ages. During the Russian conquest in 1792, the Turks lost this region to them. Alexander Suvorov, a Russian General, built a number of fortifications along Moldova’s western border, in Tiraspol. During the Soviet domination years of the region, Tiraspol was governed by Ukrainians, Romanians as well as the Russians. Romanian attackers almost dismantled the place between 1941 and 1945. In 1991, after the demise of the Soviet Union, Tiraspol was declared as the capital of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic. But, it is yet to be recognised by the international community.
