About BELMOPAN
City Belmopan –The Smallest Capital in the World
Belmopan holds the rare distinction of being the smallest capital in the world with a population of only over 12000 people. This city was constructed along the east of Belize River, after the erstwhile capital of Belize City was destroyed in a hurricane in 1961. Small and compact, this city is easily accessible on foot. Nicknamed as the ‘Garden city’ for its well kept gardens and flowering trees, Belmopan is a popular tourist destination.
History
Belmopan is a relatively new city that was set up after the Hurricane Hattie, destroyed the capital of Belize City. Located 82 kilometres from the old capital city, Belmopan was built on a better terrain that minimised the cost of setting up the capital city. It was built in 1964 when Belize was still a British colony, which involved hectic negotiations and diplomatic procedures under the leadership of the Premier George Cadle.
