Brno – Dominating the Area with Rich Architecture and Historic Monuments
Brno is the second largest city of
Czech Republic and is located in the south-eastern part of the country. To be more specific, the city is located at the union of the rivers Svitava and Svratka. It is a well-known tourist destination in the South Moravian region for offering interesting sites like castles, historic monuments and impressive architectural values.
History:
The name of the city of Brno has a number of stories associated with it. However, the most famous one is that it has been adopted from the word ‘brnen’ that means marshy. The settlements in Brno began in the 5th century AD. It was in the 11th century that the city was blessed with its castle. In the year 1243, the city came into light as a town under the rule of the King of Bohemia. The city was an important Moravian centre in the 14th century. It was invaded twice by the Hussites, without any success, in the 15th century. Similarly, the city was successful in failing the attacks from Swedish and Prussian forces. It became an industrial hub in the 19th century. Brno was captured by Germany during World War II, but was soon liberated with the defeat of Germany.

Brno City Centre is the most important area from the point of view of tourists. Some of the other attractions include the Ditrichstein Palace, Baroque Parnas Fountain and the Freedom Square.
