Brussels, the city that has earned the title of the Capital of Europe, is the capital city of
Belgium. Brussels is the administrative centre of the European Union and hence, one of the most important cities of Europe.
History
Brussels is a very old city with its history going back to the middle ages. The city has grown from a 10th century fortress town which was founded by Charlemagne’s descendents, into a huge metropolis teeming with a million inhabitants. After the Second World War, Brussels has become an important centre for international politics. Although the lingua franca of the country is French, there is a huge Dutch population contributing to the culture and the language.

Transportation in and around Brussels is never an issue. The city is well connected with other European cities by high-speed rail network like the Eurostar. Brussels is also served by two airports. Within the city, there is a very efficient Metro rail and tramway service. Apart from these, the road travel in and around the city is very convenient. Brussels also boasts of a very efficient car sharing system.

Brussels is the shopper’s paradise, with the world’s first shopping mall the Galeries Saint Hubert-Sint Hubertusgalerijen, which opened in 1847. Besides, there are many other shops, as well as the famous flea market. Brussels is a heaven for beer lovers. The breweries offer tours and some big ones claim to have over 400 varieties of beer. The pubs and the bars in the city are the most enticing in the world.
