Carcassonne – Preserved Walled Town of France

Carcassonne is the fortified town of France that is located in the Aude departement of the country. The city is well-known around the globe for its fortress, which is no less than a magnet to attract visitors and tourists who travel from everywhere. 

History:
Carcassonne has a number of legends behind its name. According to the most famous of these legends, the name was derived form the ringing of the bells that represented the celebrations of Ms. Carsac, who saved the place from enemy. In Latin, carcas sona means ringing of the bells and hence, the name.

The first human settlement at the place has its roots in 3500 BC. Long after that, the Romans fortified the hilltop in around 100BC. The city was ceded to Visigoth king Theodoric II in 462. Carcassonne played a significant role in the Albigensian Crusades. It was in 1247 that the city was brought under the rule of the Kingdom of France. Over all these years, the fortification of the city continued extensively.   

Popular places:
Ville de Carcassonne is the attractive and wonderfully designed castle belonging to Carcassonne. In fact, the fortified sites of the city are the highlights that can take an individual to a different world. Viollet-le-Duc saved the fort from demolition and also restored its value. In 1997, the fort was included in the World Heritage List of UNESCO.

Musee Memoires du Moyen-Age is the popular museum in the city that shows different stages of the city’s existence in the form of models. Ramparts and towers all around the city can be explored with the help of guided tours. Another attraction of the city is the Chateau Comtal Museum. Apart from this, one can also visit Basilique Saint-Nazaire, a 5th century building preserved till date. Basilica St Nazaire Church is famous for large glass windows, stone tablets and gravestones.
