The city of
Corfu is the main town and the capital of Corfu Island, located in
Greece. In Greek, the city is known by the name of Kerkyra and it also has a popular name of Kastropolis that means Castle City. Corfu is a popular holiday travel destination.
History:
The island of Corfu was captured by people from different settlements for short periods of time. Starting from the Phaeacians, the island was visited by people from Corinth, Eretria, Athens, Lacedaemonia, Venetia and so on. It was in 19th century that the island of Corfu was seized by French troops. However, it was captured by British troops soon and was finally united with Greece, along with other Ionian islands.
The Greek name of the city, Kerkyra, has been derived from Korkyra, who was the daughter of Asopus, a Greek river. The Greek Government declared Corfu as the Castle City because of three castle complexes found here. In 2007, the old town of the city was included in the World heritage list of UNESCO.
Popular places:
The palace of Achillion is among the main attraction of Corfu. Located in the village of Gastouri, the palace was built by the Austrian Empress, Elizabeth. It acted like the summer resort of the Empress. Archaeological Museum was built in 1960s and is known for displaying excavation finds.
St. Michael and George Palace was built by British in 1819. The palace is known for its Asiatic museum and gallery. The Asian Art Museum and the Byzantine Museum of Antivouniotissa are other places worth visiting in and around the city. A small water park, known as Aqualand, is a good place to have some great fun on water rides.
The trip to the city and the island of Corfu remains incomplete without visiting the splendid beaches of this region. Sidari, Dasia, Kassiopi, Glifada and Pelekas beach are few to mention. Mt. Pantokrator is the highest mountain of the island and offers a great opportunity for hiking.
