History
During the war between Qatar and Bahrain, Doha was severely damaged before the Qatari army won the battle against the occupants including the Ottomans. The City became the capital of the British protectorate of Qatar in 1916, which continued to be the capital of the independent nation of Qatar and it developed immensely under the rule of the Al Thanis.

Doha's beautiful Corniche that runs 7 km along the water front is popular among local and visitors alike. Enjoy a stroll along the scene or take a drive through this stunning stretch. There are many parks nearby including the Al Bida Park Doha with amusement options and café. Doha fort is another popular place of tourist interest. This Moorish style fort has many arts and crafts of the region.
The sports enthusiasts would find the Al Shaqab Stud a real banker. Owned by HH the Emir, sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, this stud farm has many champion horses to its credit. The renovated National Museum, housed in an old palace, has a rich collection of traditional costumes, jewellery, folk medicine, and many artefacts from Qatari culture.
Getting around:
Public transport bus services are limited and the most popular option to get around the city is taxi. The green coloured taxis operated by the Mowasalat transport company known as "Karwa" taxis are the most economical and convenient means of transport. The other type of taxis is the "limousine" taxis, which do not have meters and are more expensive than the Karwas.

The Camel Races, held at the main race track at Shahaniya are exciting events. Enjoy the thrills and spills of a hotly fought camel race where most locals follow the race in vehicles, adding to the frenzy of the event. There are night clubs where you can enjoy your preferred drinks, watch The DJs in full blast or hit the tiles to your favourite musical tracks.
