About DRESDEN

Dresden – The City with Artistic and Cultural Brilliance

Located on the banks of River Elbe, Dresden is better known as the capital city of the Saxony State of Germany. Destroyed in aerial bombing during World War II, the city gained back its virtue over the years to re-emerge as an important city on the world’s map, and a great travel destination.

History:
Dresden derived its name from Drezdany, a settlement of people with Slavonic origin. However, the history of the city dates back to Neolithic age, when Germanic tribes settled in the area around 600 BC. The city became the seat of the dukes of Saxony in 1485. During the World War II, Dresden was attacked as many as seven times by the Allied powers. The industrial centre of the city was completely destroyed in the aerial bombing during the war. However, the city revived its position and has now become a significant cultural and historical tourist destination.

Popular places:
The Church of Our Lady, called Frauenkirche, is the highlight of Dresden. Completely destroyed in the World War, the ruins of this church are popular as the war reminder. Semper Opera House is another attraction of the city with Renaissance period origin. Known for its theatre architecture, this place is also admired for its interior decoration. Zwinger Palace is known for its Crown Gate that also features a golden dome.

The Bruehl Terrace, which is popularly known as The European Balcony, is an 18th century palace worth visiting. The Catholic Church, Hofkirche, is popular for its tower that can be seen from a distance. 
 
Getting around:
The combined network of buses, trams and trains is the most convenient way to move between different points of interest. As a guide you can use the Maps and timetables to plan your journey. Bike taxis are available as guided city tours, operated in the Old Town the guides are usually helpful and informative. The paddle steamers in the River Elbe are worth experiencing. One can also explore the city on bicycle or on foot.

Places of Entertainment:
Dresden offers an array of entertainment spots to entertain the visitors by organizing concerts and dance shows. Beer gardens and nightclubs are other attraction of the city to provide fascinating nightlife. Big Garden is the place to relax and enjoy various types of sports. A number of museums like Military Historic Museum, Weber Museum and Leonhardi Museum can be visited to get familiar with the culture and the history of the city. Ferdinandplatz is famous as the shopping district of the city. German dishes like kebab can be relished at various restaurants in different city parts.
