About DUBROVNIK

Dubrovnik – Charming Coastal City

Rich cultural heritage, amazing beaches make trip to the southern most beautiful city of Dubrovnik in Croatia a memorable one.

History:
Dubrovnik, previously called as Ragusa, has a vast history dating back to the 5th century. Established by Greek sailors, the city progressed by maritime trade. It was under French and Austrian rule and the city was heavily destroyed during the war post Croatian independence in 1991.

Popular Places:
City walls surrounding the old city are the landmark of Dubrovnik. Built as fortress to the city, these walls still retain their charm and are among the best undamaged ancient walls of the world. Minceta tower on the higher side of walls is the highest point of the city and offers spectacular sights of the place. Bokar, St. John and St. Luke towers also offer good views. Old town of Dubrovnik is truly incredible. Cathedral of Dubrovnik and St. Blaise’s church are amazing constructions and are majestic. Rector’s palace which was seat of the erstwhile Regusan government has enormous historical significance. This grandeur built in Gothic and Renaissance style shall certainly mesmerize visitors. The narrow, pedestrian streets towards the harbor are unique and very lively. Orlando’s column near St. Blaise’s church symbols Dubrovnik’s independence.

Beaches in Dubrovnik rank among top quality sea water and are simply astonishing. Rocky, pebbled and sandy beaches offer diverse fun. Many small churches, historic houses near the Pile gate are also very attractive.

Getting Around:
Dubrovnik has an international airport and also is well connected by bus from many cities in Croatia. The city can also be reached by memorable boat rides from Split. Local buses aid in getting around, however the small amazing city can be explored easily by foot, if you choose to use the buses a good guide to smooth hassle free travel is to have some small notes and coins handy to pay for your journey.

Places of Entertainment:
Summer festivals, film and musical concerts make the place very lively. Stroll along the Stradun, the bustling street in old city is just amazing while ferry rides can leaves visitors enthralled. Numerous shops in Stradun offer varied shopping options and by virtue of its many lively cafes and restaurants, the street is sometimes also referred to as ‘most beautiful street of the world’. Clubs, bars along the beach and Stradun sparkle through the night.

Accommodation:
Private studio apartments, bed & breakfast, motels, guesthouse, inns, and youth hostels are very popular accommodation options while luxury and budget hotels are also available. Croatian is the official language; however, English, German and Italian are also widely spoken.

Currency:
Kuna is the currency of Dubrovnik, Croatia and some shops also accept Euros, make sure to check the news and internet for the latest exchange rates.
