Eisenach – The Castle City of Germany

Eisenach in Germany is well-known for being home to a number of castles and half-timbered houses. Located on the slopes of the Thuringian Forests, the city has a number of legends and cultural sites to share with visitors.

History:
Eisenach came into existence in the 12th century, when three settlements below the Wartburg Castle merged to form it in the form of a town. It was after the Thuringian War of Succession that the city came under the influence of Wettin dynasty. In the year 1809, the city was included as the part of the duchy of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach.

A number of historical events are associated with this city. Martin Luther lived in the city for some time in the 16th century. The city is also the birth place of Johann Sebastian Bach. Apart from this, the city also witnessed the formation of Social Democratic Part of Germany in the year 1869. It was also honoured with the name of ‘The City of Automotive Engineering’, as cars like Dixi and Wartburg were manufactured here.

Wartburg Castle is indeed the main attraction of Eisenach. It is the place where Martin Luther translated the Bible into German. For offering magnificent glory, the castle complex has been included in the World Heritage list. The Stadtschloss, also known as the city palace, acts as the venue for exhibitions. The Lutherhaus, where Martin Luther spent his school days, now serves as the museum to display multimedia exhibits.

The Bachhaus is the museum dedicated to Johann Sebastian Bach and displays artefacts and musical instruments. Another interesting museum in the city is Reuter-Wagner Museum. Kartaus Garden is known for its manicured paths, flower beds and a wide variety of trees. St. George Church and The Nikolai church are other two important tourist spots of the city. Automobile Welt Eisenach is the exciting car museum that describes the past importance of the city for its automobile industry.
