Gimmelwald – Witness the heaven on the Earth
A small village in Bernese Oberland highlands of
Switzerland, Gimmelwald is located between Stechelberg and Murren. Inhabited by less than 150 people, this picturesque village is best described as the heaven on the Earth for offering treasure of natural beauty.
History:
There is nothing much to speak about the history of
Gimmelwald. The village has long been considered as the perfect tourist destination, especially by those who expect loads of fun in a budget travel. The village was brought into notice by Rick Steves, a travel guide, who is also known for his book ‘Europe Through the Back Door’. Apart from this, the town has been mentioned in a number of tourist handbooks and travel guides.
Popular Places:
Gimmelwald is too small to accommodate any landmarks or tourist destinations. However, it is the scenic beauty of the mountains surrounding the village that can enforce the tourists to spend at least one day in the village. Schwarzmönch, popularly known as the Black Monk, is the huge cliff that is one of the reasons of attraction for tourists. The Mountain Hostel is not only an accommodation option, but is also known for offering wonderful scenes of the nature.
Getting Around:
Gimmelwald can be visited by the cable car that runs between Schilthorn and Murren and stops at the village a good way to
guide you to the city. Apart from this, one can use gondola to reach the village. As far as getting around the village is concerned, you will love to do it on foot. There are no road or rail transportation facilities in the village and there is no requirement of these means of transportation, as the village is too small.
Places of Entertainment:
Hiking is the most entertaining activity in the village, as a number of hiking trails can be found at this place. The 5 hour hiking trail from
Gimmelwald to Schilthorn is one of the most admired ways to explore the magnificent beauty of the place. Gimmelwald to Oberhornsee is another hiking trail that takes 7 hours to complete and one can enjoy a number of pastures, meadows and waterfalls on the way.
One can purchase fresh cheese and other dairy products from the shop in the village. Alpine cheese and yoghurt, Chocolate fondue and pizzas can also be enjoyed at cafes and restaurants. Swiss wines and beers are among the exotic drinks one can enjoy at the bar.
