City Ibadan – Ancient City with Modern Outlook
The city of Ibadan is the fourth most populous city of Nigeria and it serves as the capital of the Oyo State. Also, it is the largest city in whole of the West Africa. History
Lagelu, the commander-in-chief of Ife and few other people from the neighbouring cities founded a new city called Eba Odan in 1829. Literally, the name of the city translated to “between the forest and plains’. However, the city was destroyed by the Alaafin or Oyo, following an incident at the Egungun festival. Lagelu and some others survived and established a new city called Eba’dan. The name was ultimately changed to Ibadan by a huge population of warriors who assisted the city in its war against the Olowu of Owu. The city became a British colony in 1893 and grew as a major trading centre.

The Institute of African Studies housing a museum is one of the popular places in Ibadan. The museum has exhibits in the form of bronze carvings and statues belonging to pre-historic times. The Bower Memorial Tower that offers excellent views of the city is another place worth visiting. Cocoa House, the first African skyscraper, is located at the city’s commercial centre.
The Map City Hall designed in colonial style is located on the top of a hill and is a good site for the tourists. Some other popular places in the city include the Mokola cultural centre and the first African stadium known as the Liberty Stadium.
