Inverness –Gateway to the Highlands of Scotland

History:
Existence of Inverness dates back to the 6th century. Its history marks many battles due to its strategic location by the sea. It is situated along the river Ness and hence it is called Inverness meaning ‘mouth of the river Ness’.

Popular Places:
Urquhart Castle on the banks of Loch Ness is one of the most visited castles of Scotland. The castle has been a fortress for centuries in Scotland’s history. The second largest lake of Scotland, Loch Ness, is a major attraction and its boat tours offer spectacular highland views. Highland cattle in the farmlands are unique and attract visitors.

One can explore the history and art of the place at the museum and art gallery which houses medieval and contemporary art. Saint Andrew’s cathedral along the river is another attraction. The Culloden Moor where the battle of Culloden was fought in 1746 retraces visitors aided by informative signs. Town hall besides having an illustrious history of hosting the only cabinet meeting of the British government outside London is a marvelous piece of architecture. Fort George is an erstwhile army base which today houses an extensive collection of arms, artillery defenses.
