History
Jiddah is thought to be an erstwhile fishing hamlet, set up in 500 BC by Yemeni Quada tribe. Jeddah shot into fame in 647 A.D., when the third Muslim Caliph, Uthman Ibn Affan turned it into a port for the pilgrims on their way to Mecca. Being a strategic port in the Red Sea and the gateway to the Holy city, Jiddah was attacked many times.
