Kandy - Centre of Attraction in the Centre of Sri Lanka
Kandy is a fantastic hill station tucked away in the centre of Sri Lanka and is one of the hottest tourist destinations in the world. Located half a kilometre above sea level, the weather is very pleasant throughout the year with temperate remaining consistently between 25 and 30 degrees. The view of the majestic hills with a serene lake flowing through the centre is breathtaking. The city enjoys a very cool climate. Famous for numerous temples and greenery, Kandy is best visited between August and April. If you are fond of rains, the city can welcome you during the remaining months too.

History
Senkadagalapura, that’s how Kandy was known 6 centuries ago. After falling into the hands of Portugese, Duth and finally to British, the city’s architecture showcases a mixed bag of construction styles.
The Temple of the Tooth is also located in Kandy. Famous for the story behind the magical powers of Buddha’s tooth, Kandy became a hot spot even for local tourists.
Buddhism, which is now gaining a lot of popularity, is widely respected here. The Sacred Tooth Relic eventually was considered as a representation of Lord Buddha and subsequently, grew a series of rituals, customs and ceremonies.
Popular Places
• Dalada Maligava: The temple of the tooth is located here and is visited in large numbers by Buddhists. While this is a historic place, you get to see city life and can shop in the luxurious malls, take a stroll to bump into Pizza Hut and as you keep walking, you will see the majestic Octagon built in the 19th century. This is a good place to spend a lot of time walking and checking out the place.
• Royal Botanical Gardens: Just 7 km from the temple of tooth is the beautiful botanical garden. While numerous varieties of orchids and green lawns tempt you to stroll, this is a lovely place to spend time with your family. No matter who you are, you will spend a lot of time enjoying the greenery of the garden.
Getting Around
Public transport is the preferred way for most tourists because it gives them a feel of the local life. Well connected bus networks and trains that connect important cities do not bother an average tourist unless it is very important that s/he travel in absolute comfort. You also get travel guide books which come in very handy.
For the time bound tourists, you have the three-wheelers and taxis that will take you around. However, as with any new place, it is good to agree on the fare before beginning the trip.
Getting a good driver who also acts like a guide depends on your luck but if you get one, thoroughly enjoy the trip.
Places of Entertainment
The Temple of the Tooth is the most visited place because of the multiple options that you will have. Spend time shopping on the streets, eat contemporary food or admire the beautiful temple. The lake adjoining the temple will leave you wanting to spend more time.
But if you are particular about visiting Kandy during a festival time, visit Esala Perahara festival begins. It is celebrated with a lot of vigour and with plenty of elephants on display. It is also a good opportunity to check out the country’s cultural extravaganzas.
Currency
Sri Lankan Rupee (Re) is the currency of Sri Lanka. The currency notes are of the denomination from Rs. 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000. You can also bring your traveller’s cheque or any other currency which can be exchanged at many hotels or banks.
