City of Kibuye in Rwanda - The Land of a Thousand Islands

The capital of the Western Province in Rwanda, Kibuye is nestled along the banks of Lake Kivu. The genocide memorial that tells the macabre tales of the genocide of the Tutsi population in the Rwandan civil war is in this city. A well known beach resort, it is an ideal place for both adventure and fun. Hiking, swimming and wild life safaris form some of the must do activities. A myriad of floating volcanic islands gives it a romantic charm.

Kibuye has a range of accommodation options including budget hotels, bed and breakfast, guesthouses and hostels that do not typically involve any booking fees. Most of the hostels will have TV, telephone, mosquito net and reasonably priced meals. Kibuye has a high crime rate so it is recommended not to venture out at night alone. Choose any hostel that is located near the city centre and close to all the conveniences.

Kinyarwanda or Rwanda language is the common mode of communication in the city. English and French too are popular languages spoken by the city people.

History
The genocide of the 1994 during the civil war made this city in shambles. However with the end of the civil war, peace has returned and Kibuye is slowly evolving to be a popular tourist destination, well known for its relaxed, welcoming environment.

Popular Places
Napoleon’s Hat Island, the home of thousands of bats, is an important tourist attraction of this city. The island, which is shaped like a French military hat is also a popular hiking and climbing destination. The Bisesero Genocide Memorial Site made up of nine small buildings which stand for the nine original communes of the province of Kibuye is another must see. Built in memory of the heroic resistance put up by the people of Bisesero, it is now known as the ‘Hill of Resistance’.

Getting Around
Kibuye can be accessed by road and there are bus services that connect the different parts of the city. The buses can be crowded and the schedules can be irregular. It is a small town that can also be explored on foot or on motor-taxis. A well informed guide can help you to take a better city tour.

Places of Entertainment
Lake Kivu, set amidst mountains has a popular place in Kibuye itineraries. Located at an altitude of 1460 meters above the sea level, it is a spectacular sight. In addition to the modern water sports facilities, traditional boats can also be used to explore nature and the local culture and lifestyles. The night life is exciting and varied in this city, which has many bars, pubs and nightclubs that are mostly confined to the city centre.
