Kuala Lumpur – The Heart of Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur is rightly called the heart of Malaysia as it is known for its fast city life, lively neighbourhoods, thriving nightlife, dazzling lights and colourful markets.

History of Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur was captured by the army of Japan on January 11, 1942 during the World War II and remained under its control until August 15, 1945. K.L., as Kuala Lumpur is popularly called, was granted the city status in 1972 and became the first settlement in the country to be granted such status, post-independence.

Popular Places and Attractions
Kuala Lumpur City Centre, more popularly known as KLCC is the right place to begin your sightseeing tour in Kuala Lumpur. This commercial centre is home to Petronas Twin Towers, a 5-star hotel, the Suria KLCC Shopping Mall and a park. One can get a glimpse of Malaysia’s famous wooden houses at Kampung Baru located near Chow Kit Market. Muzium Negara or the National Museum, located outside the Lake Gardens of Kuala Lumpur, is another interesting place to visit in the city. The museum houses a mix of dioramas, exhibits and galleries that include artefacts relics of historical importance, arts and handicrafts, cultural items, etc.

Some other popular tourist attractions in Kuala Lumpur are China Town, Little India, Batu Caves, National Art Gallery, National Mosque, etc. The Thean Hou Temple, believed to be one of the oldest temples of Southeast Asia, is another interesting sight with its spectacular design. The Tugu Negara, the House of Parliament and the Istana Negara are some places of historical importance in Kuala Lumpur.

Getting Around in Kuala Lumpur
Almost every part of the city of Kuala Lumpur is connected to highways making driving a popular and easy mode of commuting. Buses, trains and fleet taxis are a common sight on the roads of Kuala Lumpur. Consult a travel guide for more directions.

Places of Entertainment
The area around KLCC witnesses huge gathering of people, including locals and foreign nationals, for shopping and clubbing purposes and is hence a major source of entertainment. Chinatown and Bukit Bintang are other interesting places for shoppers and food lovers.
