History
Since ages, Machala has been a commercial centre known for its massive banana exports; the city has often been called the banana city of the world. The coffee and cocoa trade have also been flourishing, thanks to its geographical positioning. As a fresh piece of history, the Statue of El Bananero (man with a banana-tree branch) is a tribute to the significance of banana on lives of locals and the economy.
Accommodation Options
There are small to medium sized hotels close to the beaches which offer basic amenities while the city hotels are well equipped with all modern amenities and are on par with Quito based hotels. Guesthouse facilities and small budget hotels are available at reasonable rates but booking prior to coming here is recommended. For backpackers and hitchhikers, youth hostels facilities are available at reasonable rates in the city.
Popular Places
The beautiful Puerto Bolivar port surrounded by enthralling mangroves is very close to the city. The waterfront bypass to Jambeli Islands here is one of the most scenic and spectacular sights of South America. Jambeli Islands has many long stretches of beaches favoured by locals and visitors alike. Boat rides, water sports and the popular fast-food at the beaches are worth every penny.
The waterfront area along with the Love Islands offers a nice view for nature lovers, especially bird watchers as local and migratory sea birds glide through the area, totally unaware that they are being photographed for their splendour. Travellers planning to travel to Costa Rica are advised to keep their passport handy.
Getting Around
For visitors travelling to islands close-by or Costa Rica, motorized boats are the best option along with private transportation wherever applicable.
