Naxos enjoys the status of being a fertile and the largest island of the island groups of Cyclades in
Greece. Known for its fertile plains, the island also offers variety of tourist attractions, and is a great travel destination for Holidays.
History:
Naxos came into notice in 502 BC, when Persian invaders tried to capture the island, but failed in their attempt. This led to the famous Persian War between Greece and Persia. In 7th and 8th centuries, Naxos became the famous commerce centre of the region. Marco Sanudo from Venetia captured the island, along with other islands of Cyclades. After that a number of dukes ruled the island, which was also renamed as Nasso. The island also came under Turkish rule for short period and was then known by the name of Nakşa. It was in the year 1832 that the island became a part of Greece.
Popular places:
Naxos Castle is the main attraction of the island. It is famous for accommodating the Tower of Glezos. The fortress of Sanoudos in Chora was considered to be protected by this castle. The plans are to convert this place into a museum. The Great Door, popularly known as the Portara of Naxos, is another impressive feature of the island. It is a huge marble structure with an incomplete temple nearby. It is a wonderful experience to view the sunset from this place.
Apiranthos Village is known for its beauty and its name translates to ‘plenty of flowers’. Marble made houses and the Church of Panagia Apeirathitissa are the main attractions of this village. One can also find a number of museums and a Venetian tower located at this place.
Agios Prokopios is among the most popular beaches of the island. Strong winds, crystal clear water and golden sand are some of the impressive features of this beach. Agia Anna, Maragas, Orkos and Plaka are other beaches worth visiting.
Getting around:
Walking is the most appropriate way to get around and explore the city. However, the bus service can also be used to visit different places of interest, the way to
guide yourself round the island is to check the Maps and timetables. Motorbike and cars can also be hired.
Places of Entertainment:
Naxos beaches offer plenty of activities like nude sunbathing and windsurfing. Diving is another popular activity and one can visit Naxos Diving Centre at Plaka Beach for this. Moussaka, souvlaki and mild feta are some of the delicious foods served at Naxos restaurants. Kitron and raki are the famous drinks of this place.
