About POKHARA

City Pokhara in Nepal – Enchanting Tourist Spot in Himalayan Valley

Located about 200 Kilometers west of Kathmandu and at a height of 884 meters from the sea level, Pokhara is known as enchanting Himalayan Valley that provides multiple actions and adventures. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains, it is one of the most popular tourist spots in the country.

Hotels, guest houses, budget hotels, and youth hostels are available in Pokhara catering to the requirements of accommodation for the visitors. Lodgings and resorts providing basics are also available though no such bed and breakfast accommodation in the western sense is available. However, the hotels are resorts are affordable and many offer the off season discounts.

History
One of the most important trading routes between Tibet and India during the 17th century of influential kingdom of Kaski ruled by Shah Dynasty it was the location of trade by Newars of Bhaktapur. Prithvi Naryan Shah added Pokhara in his kingdom in 1786. Subsequently Gurung has become dominant community of Pokhara. Many refugees came from neighboring Tibet during 1959-62 when Tibet was annexed by China. After the completion of the first road Siddhartha Highway in 1968, it grew into one of the major tourism hubs of Nepal.

Places of Interest
Some of the famous places to visit include Bindhyabasini temple, Bhimsen temple, and Barahi temple, the Buddhist stupa on Sarangkot, the World Peace Stupa, Manaslu, Annapurna and Dhaulgiiri Himal.

Once can enjoy shopping at the Old centre of the city named Bagar or Purano Bazar of Newari style and at commercial city centre at Chiple Dhunga and Mahendrapul, now called Bhimsen Chowk.

Thulakot, the part of famous Royal Trek and four lakes Phewa, Begnas, Khaste, and Dipang and the view of Annapurna range are truly world class.

Getting Around
Located at a distance of 124 miles or 200 kilometers from Kathmandu, Pokhara can be reached by a flight in 25 minutes and by bus in 6 hours from the capital city. Several bus routes are there that runs the length of the city from north to south. Pritivi Chok is the main entrance from Kathmandu, while Naya Bus Park near Puruna Bazar is link to Baglung and Beni. Pokhara Airport has links with Kathmandu and other major cities. Helicopters are available on charter.

Entertainment
Moving in boat in lakes like Phewa, Begnas, Rupa, Gude, Neurani, Deepang, Maidy, and Khastey or in rivers like Seti, Gandaki, and Bijaypur could be an exotic experience. Cultural shows, theatre, local art, wine and dinner centres, music and dance in discotheques, rummy and blackjack in casinos, or watching movies in cosy theatres, all are avenues of excellent entertainment. Excellent shopping centres and bazaars provide outlets for the visitors buying excellent local artefacts. However, the best entertainment options in Pokhara include golf, paragliding, bowling, mountain bike, LAN gaming, kayaking, meditation and yoga, shopping, aircraft, and ultra lights and such adventurous sports.

Currency
Currency in use in Pokhara is the national currency of Nepal, NPR or Nepalese rupee. Exchange rates are available on the Internet or in the news channels. Banks and money exchanges are available at multiple places in the city.
