City Puerto Varas: The City of Roses

Puetro Varas, a city in Southern Chile, is located in the Los Lagos (Lakes) Region in the province of Llanquihue.it is at an elevation of 5m from the sea level. It has emerged as an important residential town, and important tourist spot, since last few years.

History
The city of Puerto Varas is also known as ‘the city of roses’. It was found in 1854 by Vicente Pérez Rosales. When the city was found, during the presidency of Manuel Montt, the ministry of interior was headed by Antonio Varas, after whom the city is named. Mostly to the European German speaking people, lands were offered by Montt administration around the region of Lake Llanquihue. It was found as main port on the lake, connecting by road to nearest seaport, Puerto Montt.

Popular Places and Monuments
There’s a church built by German colonizers which is worth a visit. Sagrado Corazon de Jesus is a third catholic church of the city, built on a hill, and is a historical, as well as tourist destination.

Getting Around
There is a bus network to take you anywhere within the city you want to visit. Other than that, taxi is available. Take a guide to help you in every travel related problem.

Places for Entertainment
There is a major Casino on Del Salvador, across the street from the Plaza. It is near the waterfront.

Other than that, there are lots of options of day trips and adventures, from and in Puerto Varas.

•    Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park: It is 64km from Puerto Varas. It is along the direction of Ruta CH-225. Valdivian temperate rain forest vegetation in its mountainous variant is found in it. Around 30 shy species of mammals live, which are difficult to observe. Along with that, rodent groups, and around 80 birds are native to this place.

•    The Petrohué Falls are located near the National Park, and are chute-type waterfalls. They are beautiful, further beautified by the presence of Volcano around them.

•    Lake Todos Los Santos is around 76km to the east of Puerto Varas. It is a monomictic lake, which has an island in it named Isla Margarita.

•    Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes provide visual delight to the travelers.

•    Mt Osorno is open for sightseeing in summers, and skiing in winters.

Accommodation
There are some good budget hotels, and some midrange hotels. Guesthouses are also privately run by families, to those who want a home feeling in their accommodation. Its hard to find many bed & breakfast or youth hostels but there are a few.

Currency
CLP or the Chilean Peso is the national currency, which consist of 100 centavos. Check latest exchange news, or online exchange portals for current rates of exchange. However, 100 CLP nearly equal one-fifth USD.
